Everything You Need to Know About Cannabis at Events
Thursday, April 18, 2019
Once a taboo subject, cannabis is an emerging event trend now being seen at events ranging from upscale cocktail brunches and weddings to office parties and backyard barbeques. However, hospitality professionals who wish to offer this option in their services may encounter several challenges in a rapidly changing field.
You will not find a united set of regulations and/or laws for cannabis even in those states and countries that have legalized it for adult use. Coupled with a lack of information and education about the cannabis plant itself, inconsistent cannabis regulations require event organizers to develop key relationships with industry professionals, government representatives and community organizations in order to be successful.
The best-case scenario is to host an event where cannabis is provided and guests also have the option to consume alcohol. This is especially appealing to experienced cannabis enthusiasts who often prefer feeling “high” over “tipsy.” Those who are exploring cannabis (referred to as the “canna-curious”) will have questions and surely appreciate credible information being shared and made available to them
For the canna-curious, the worst thing that can occur is a negative experience (although this can happen to even the most experienced consumer). Over-consumption of THC, sometimes a result of combining cannabis and alcohol, while not fatal, could cause a canna-curious attendee to feel extremely uncomfortable and fearful. Reactions can include feelings of anxiety, paranoia, sweating, heart palpitations, nausea and even vomiting.
If available, CBD tincture is the best option to counteract these effects. Cooling down the body temperature, taking water and/or light refreshments, lying down and even sniffing freshly ground black pepper has also proven helpful. Fortunately, cannabis is one of the safest substances available. Negative side effects usually diminish and disappear within a short time. Typically, if the individual can fall asleep, they will wake up feeling relaxed and refreshed. A professional who knows this can ensure a better overall event experience.
10 Tips to Promote Safe Practices When Serving Cannabis Products
1. Know what you are dealing with. Educate yourself about cannabis to understand its diversity, effects and culture.
2. Edibles infused with THC should always be marked clearly with labels and signage and separated from regular non-infused foods.
3. The amount of THC per serving should always be listed and easily viewed.
4. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
5. Recognize overconsumption and how to correctly assist
6. Where available, keep CBD tincture on hand.
7. Ensure education/information regarding cannabis is available at the event.
